The Band Toto Asia
Toto expanded its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure the future generations could read them. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.
Origins
The early history of Toto, which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the first half of 1917, Toto made goods to meet the demand for modern, brand new urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products from other manufacturers to complement its own lines of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.
In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and boost profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to managing its supply chain and applied the same approach for its sales process. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction of customers.
Toto continues to invent in the toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for instance is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green procurement policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than typical models.
The first museum of the company opened in 2015 It has exhibits on Toto's most iconic products and their development, its group companies (all that deal with ceramics) as well as the historical background of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even has a bathroom that features a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto, members of the band did session work for many musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You might expect a band with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a pretty straightforward rock outfit. The group began as a quartet, and they released two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without issues. The record companies put Toto under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would drop them. Luckily for Toto, they did and they did it with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. However, the album also includes some slower, more jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn to the downside. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded performances.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour to promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be revived. The group, which was missing Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
